Ueno is a fast-growing full-service digital agency. Ueno was founded in 2014 by Haraldur Thorleifsson, an Icelandic graphic designer. Since then, the company has expanded to offices in San Francisco, New York City, and Reykjavik, Iceland. They've worked with companies like Google, Facebook, Uber, Medium, RedBull, Airbnb, Lonely Planet, and Dropbox.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Ueno was in the process of redesigning their website and wanted to create video content of their employees to incorporate into the "about page" and their social media. They wanted to show people working, facing the camera, in front of a solid colored backdrop. They wanted to include a weird/quirkiness factor in the videos, Michel Gondry was a big inspiration for that.
I was directing, filming, and editing this project. I also led the process of planning and scheduling studio shoots in the three different cities that Ueno is located in. There were three people from the San Francisco office that worked on the art direction over the entire project. The Reykjavik and New York City offices also had several people that worked on art direction for the individual shoots, and office administrators that helped coordinate transportation and scheduling times for each employee to be filmed.
Ueno has around 35 employees between their three offices, so there was a bit of time spent on figuring out how much studio time we would need between the offices. Iceland was especially challenging because it was difficult to find a studio space that was large enough. Most film production that happens in Iceland is outside, not in a studio. Fortunately, the local company we used to rent lights also had a studio space attached to their facility.
